The Present Moment

To live in the present moment, to come back
to “now”, has little to do with assessing or
attempting to figure out what we believe
to be going on right now, and much to do
with realizing that what we think is
going on right now is distracting
us from being at peace. There is a
fear of letting go of our thoughts
and concerns because they feel so
important, as if by letting them go
means we are making a mistake, that
it is dangerous to ignore such thoughts
because our happiness depends on “solving”
the problem. To be mindful and to come
back to the present is a mental
understanding that realizes our “problem
solving” is in reality a distraction
from the happiness we already possess.
As frightful and counter productive as is
may seem, letting go of our “pressing
thoughts” is what brings us peace. To
live in the present moment means directing
our attention to what is happening around
us in real time, without allowing our
mental focus to be fixated on assessing
or “solving” the now.The very presence of
such thoughts steals our attention away
from that moment; they are a convincing
distraction that appears to be our “reality”
but actually serves to obscure it from us.
