I recall my childhood fondly,
growing up exploring castles
and searching for the Loch Ness Monster.
Kilts and bagpipes, stinging nettle and thistles.
Scotland was a beautiful dream.
In basic mindfulness, they speak of the “Beginner's Mind.”
A child-like fascination with everything around you which
Causes you to pay more attention to things we would call “mundane.”
I am far from mastering this skill,
but if I could live with that child-like wonder again,
I'd do it in a heartbeat.
Constantly learning, constantly exploring with awe.
That sounds heavenly.
This is what the “beginner's mind” seeks to renew in us.
A simple fascination with what is transpiring around us.
With this state of mind, meditation and mindfulness
takes on a brilliantly new facet of curiosity for us.
Even something as simple as breathing can become a
wondrous experience for us all. The subtleties of warm breath
versus cool breath, for example, might seem boring to us,
but to a mind first experiencing it, it could be like night and day.
The random games I would play as a child
can be transferred to mindful activities,
such as stepping in the mud barefoot
just to see how it feels different from shoes.
It's hard to lose interest when everything is like new.
This is the goal of having a beginner's mind
This will help you begin your journey into mindfulness.
