Weird… I spend most of my time sitting in this room in complete silence, but seldom do I ever notice the sound of the clock’s ticking; I almost forgot it existed at all. It seems the sounds of my own thoughts drown out just about everything around me, leaving me almost literally deaf to what truly is present in THIS moment. Too much of life finds me that way, tuned out from what is real- blind, deaf, and otherwise senseless to the reality that exists independently of my attention. Thoughts, experiences, sensations, anxieties, and life itself all come and go, but the present is eternal- we will NEVER find ourselves without the present moment. This moment, and ONLY THIS moment, is the one viewpoint we will ever have to peek through into our minds and into the universe ticking around us. To live in the present- to be attentive to IT, and NOT to the mindless distractions of memory (past) and expectation (future), NOR to our judgments of those very distractions- is the simplest and truest form of genuine selfless compassion, for that is where the concept of “self” has nowhere to stand; with no past and no future, the present moment simply exists, without bias, exactly the way it is: with no obligation or regard for our approval or notice.
